A WITHERING attack on companies for failing to manage safety issues relating to employees who drive their own cars on business has been made in a report by vehicle leasing and fleet management company Arval.

The report suggests that almost 25% (one million) of vehicles driven on business is a so-called ‘grey fleet’ car. And, based on a survey of more than 400 fleet managers, the company concludes that there are ‘potentially thousands of these vehicles being driven that are unsafe and not fit-for-purpose, putting employees and other drivers at risk’.

However, the report highlights that it probably is not fleet managers who are to blame. Instead, Arval calls on management ‘at the highest level’ to get to grips with the issue. Anecdotal evidence that ‘grey fleet’ vehicles are being driven on business unchecked and unmanaged has been rife.

The report is probably the first to give a clear picture that employees using their own cars at work are a health and safety timebomb for thousands of companies.
