PROVIDING the optimum car-related benefits package for employees is all about companies making the ‘right’ choice while balancing a range of often-conflicting issues.

It is for this reason that ALD Automotive has launched AutoSolutions, a unique total cost of ownership fleet software programme that analyses in fine detail every single factor - both corporate and personal - impacting on vehicle funding, car choice and services to be offered.

Developed by Deloitte, the software comprises three separate but integrated modules, the latest one (Services Selector) recently being added in conjunction with the AutoSolutions team:

• Car Selector identifies a company’s ‘perfect fleet’ while taking into account all corporate and driver criteria including specific health and safety and environmental objectives. The ultimate company car choice list is compiled by taking into account: list price, rental payment, wholelife costs, engine size, carbon dioxide emissions, fuel type, fuel consumption and insurance group as well as the tax implications for drivers and the business. The software’s flexibility also means calculations can be made for private use and capital contributions made by staff for cars whose wholelife costs maybe outside a specified parameter.

• Fleet Choice highlights and recommends the most cost-effective funding mechanism for each fleet and individual drivers. Recognising that every employer and employee has differing requirements, the software’s intelligence means that by importing analysis from Car Selector the definitive cost-effective funding solution for both the company and each employee can be identified.

• Services Selector assesses the impact of a large number of variables that, combined, have a significant overall influence on the total cost of ownership of a vehicle however the car is funded. The variables include: internal administration, short term car hire, vehicle breakdown cover, accident management, driver training, fuel cards, end of contract recharges, excess mileage charges, missed services and early termination. Providing a unique insight into each vehicle’s ‘real world’ whole life running costs, the software enables companies to view a complete cost picture of their vehicle operation.

ALD Automotive operates more than 46,000 vehicles in the UK and the new AutoSolutions team is a specialist division within the company’s sales team. Consisting of experienced analysts who are experts in vehicle funding, fleet choice lists and the deployment of proven, cost effective and practical car policies, the team will work with both new and existing customers.

Alison Chapman, Deloitte’s head of automotive tax, said: ‘Now, more than ever, employees are choosing the make and model of their car to match their personal tax advantage and lifestyle. As a result the days of the ‘one glove fits all’ approach have long gone.

‘Add in to the mix the wealth of financial, tax, insurance, environmental and health and safety legislation, protocols and directives that have already emanated from both the UK Government and the European Commission - and there are more in the pipeline - and the advice and assistance of experts is essential to achieve cost efficiencies for both employers and employees as well as business effectiveness.

‘Businesses frequently make the mistake of jumping into a company car review by tweaking policies they already have in place or following the latest industry fashion - instead of beginning with a blank sheet of paper.’

ALD Automotive managing director Keith Allen said: ‘A cost analysis to ascertain the optimum funding route for vehicle provision should be made at least annually. The company car or one of the myriad of alternatives available is no longer the panacea for every single employee. Instead, employers must provide a range of solutions
