ALFA Romeo has introduced an intelligent Q-Tronic automatic gearbox system mated to 1.9 JTDM, 2.4 JTDM and 3.2 JTS V6 powerplants for its Brera, 159 and Spider models.
Combining the convenience of an automatic with the driver involvement of a manual, this advanced and practical system does away with the need for a clutch pedal, and gives the driver the flexibility to choose between a manual mode with lever gearchange or a traditional automatic mode. A ‘sport’ and ‘winter’ function is also available along with some ‘under the skin’ technology to keep the occupants safe.
The first new 210 bhp versions of Alfa’s 2.4 JTDM are already available on the Brera and 159 models. Boosted by 10 bhp over the outgoing engines, the new unit delivers 294 lb ft of torque at 1,500rpm. The 159 2.4 JTDM saloon can accelerate from rest to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds (8.6 seconds for the Sportwagon) before reaching a top speed of 140 mph for the saloon and 139 mph for the Sportwagon.
The additional 10 bhp helps launch the Alfa Brera from a standstill to 60 mph in 7.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 143 mph.
Prices for the Q-Tronic range are: Brera 3.2 JTS V6 Q4 SV £30,700 on-the-road; 159 saloon prices start at £22,200 for the 1.9 JTDM 16V Turismo; 159 Sportwagon prices start at £24,700 for the 1.9 JTDM 16v Turismo; Spider 3.2 JTS V6 Q4 £32,700.
Meanwhile, the Spider range has been extended with the addition of the 200 bhp 2.4 JTDM 20v unit. Mated to a six speed ’box, this Spider has a top speed of 141 mph and covers the 0-60 mph sprint in 8.4 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 41.5 mpg. The model costs £28,995.
Finally, high-powered diesel versions of Alfa’s 147 and GT models now feature a sporty twist, in the form of a limited slip front differential that further improves and increases driving enjoyment and control. The system is available exclusively with the 150 bhp 1.9 JTDM 16v engine.
Drivers choosing the option will benefit from a more sensitive set-up that maintains traction, roadholding and stability during hard acceleration in low grip conditions, and notably when exiting corners.
To help differentiate the models from their stablemates, both boast a number of exterior and interior stylistic changes. Prices start at £16,950 for the three-door 147 Sport Limited Edition. (Alfa Romeo: October 23).
