A RAFT of developments in the Ford Transit range have been created to help fleet operators manage the changing needs of transportation in Britain. All new models are available to order now.

Steve Kimber, director, commercial vehicles, Ford of Britain, said: ‘The commercial vehicle market continues to evolve, and it´s important we continue to develop our product range to meet customers’ changing needs.’

The changes see the introduction of an all-new 3.2 litre, five-cylinder, TDCi engine that develops 200 PS and 470 Nm of torque. It is available with rear-wheel drive transmission and an upgraded six-speed gearbox. As on all other Transit versions, adaptive ESP is standard. The new model is identified by the unique front styling, which features additional air intake. Prices start at £22,950 (350M, medium roof, panel van).

With a move by some operators to climb the payload ladder and other operators downsizing from 7.5 tonne trucks’ the Transit range is being extended to take advantage of these new market opportunities.

The 4.6 tonne (N2 class) range of vans, chassis and chassis double cabs is available with both the six-speed 140 PS and the all-new 200 PS rear-wheel drive powertrains. Prices start at £25,800 (460EL 140PS Jumbo DRW).

For operators who demand greater loading latitude from their vehicle whilst remaining within the N1 class legislation, the new 350 Heavy Duty (HD) series of vehicles has been unveiled.

The 350HD is available on a range of panel vans, chassis and chassis double cabs with both the 140 PS and 200 PS powertrains. Prices start at £25,050 (350EL 140PS Jumbo DRW).

A new all-wheel-drive (AWD) Transit is now available priced from £23,495 for the 330 short wheelbase panel van. Transit’s AWD system is available with the 2.4 litre 140 PS Duratorq TDCi diesel engine equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.

The Transit AWD will be offered above the rear wheel drive on chassis cab, minibuses and the Transit panel van range including Double-Cab-in-Van. Low, medium or high roof derivatives will be available and short, medium or long wheelbase.

All front-wheel-drive Transits are being enhanced with the introduction of a new 2.2 litre 140 PS six-speed power train, replacing the 130 PS five-speed model. In addition to the extra gear, the new powertrain also develops an extra 13% of torque - 350 Nm compared with 310 Nm for the previous model. This new powertrain will be available in Transit SportVan around spring 2008.

Meanwhile, the inclusion of ESP in Transit continues with dual rear wheel drive models now being produced with ESP as standard. This includes Jumbo vans, chassis and chassis double cabs and 17-seat minibus. In addition, ESP is being upgraded across the range to include hill launch assist.

In line with the market for these new models, an increased capacity fuel tank option, costing £55 increases rear wheel drive Transit capacity from 80 litres to 103 litres for customers requiring greater range. (Ford: October 18/22).
